Tamil Nadu seeks oil spill damages
Chennai: Fishermen in Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts incurred an estimated loss of Rs 135.35 crore due to the oil spill after two cargo ships collided here in January and the State has asked Director General of Shipping to get funds released from insurance companies at the earliest as compensation, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palanisami said on Monday.
Addressing a function organised in Jayalalithaa’s RK Nagar assembly seat to distribute compensation for those affected by the oil slick, he said that the AIADMK government was committed to the welfare of fishermen since MGR days and the state is concerned over the heavy losses incurred by TN fishermen.
The assembly constituency consists of a good chunk of such fishermen affected by the oil slick. A letter has been sent to Director General of Shipping to get the amount released from insurance companies, he said.
