Media should work for society: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
Bengaluru: The media should work for the good of society and only then one can expect changes in society, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, inaugurating the TV Journalists Association here on Sunday.
“Some TV channels act like advocates and judges and draw their own conclusion. It is a dangerous trend. People who are trained and experienced in their respective fields have to do their jobs,” he said.
“Journalism is also a social service like others. The media personnel should understand their responsibilities. I believe that people are god and I act according to my conscience. There has to be freedom of expression but it has to be used for the welfare of society,” he said.
Union Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda said his government is ready to bring in new legislation for the protection of journalists. The media associations can give points to be incorporated in the proposed legislation.
Jnanpith awardee Chandrashekar Kambar said that media can shake any government if it is committed to its professional ethics. “But of late, there is a competition among TV channels, resulting in sensationalising and glorification of news,” he said.
