Karatt Abdul Rassak, the Koduvally constituency-level committee general secretary and a popular face in the constituency, resigned on Saturday expressing his willingness to contest as a rebel against IUML official candidate MA Rassak.

A strong leader in the UDF citadel, Mr Abdul Rassak was expecting his candidature at Koduvally as the sitting MLA Ummer Master was shifted to Thiruvambadi.

It is to be recalled that the CPM on the seat because of an IUML rebel PTA Rahim a decade back. He had defeated Congress leader K Muraleedharan in 2006. Meanwhile IUML leaders are disconcerted about the intimacy of Abdul Rassak with the Kanthapuram faction. However, the CPM has already started exploring possibilities of a repetition of 2006 and is supporting Karatt Abdul Rassak in the constituency.

However Mr Rassak told DC that he was yet to decide on his future course. “There was an organised effort to sideline me in the party and I have decided to quit the party to pursue my own political line”, he added.
