Thanjavur: Ryots urge PM to waive farm loans

Sukumar said that Rs 6,000 per annum worked out to Rs 17 per day.

Thanjavur: Demanding waiver of farm loans, a section of farmers here on Tuesday sent Rs 17 by money order to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, protesting against the grant of Rs 6,000 per annum for farmers having lands up to two hectares. Farmers led by Kakkarai R. Sukumaran,vice-president of Thamizhaga Vivasaya Sangangalin Koottiyakkam, came to the head post office, and sent the MO. Later, they staged a demonstration.

Sukumar said that Rs 6,000 per annum worked out to Rs 17 per day. This is a pittance and a farmer can have only tea and vada with that amount. Instead of this, what farmers expect is waiver of loans, he added. “At least, the state government should announce farm loan waiver in its budget on February 8,” added Sukumaran.
