Mexican couple lose handbag in Kanchipuram Sankara mutt

Following their visit and darshan, when the group returned to the waiting room, they found only the couple's handbag missing.

Chennai: In an unfortunate incident, a couple from Mexico had their handbag stolen from the Sankara mutt in Kanchipuram district on Wednesday.

The incident occurred as Kooshea, 40, and his wife Ehippe, 35, along with 30 other people who were visiting India from Mexico had left their bags at the waiting room in the Sankara mutt to enter the premises at 11 am.

Following their visit and darshan, when the group returned to the waiting room, they found only the couple's handbag missing. The handbag contained their passports, visas, ATM and credit cards and a camera worth Rs 2 lakh.

The group immediately rushed to the mutt management who claimed that thefts are uncommon there and that they must have misplaced it.

However, on looking at the CCTV footage, they found an old, short and stout man, dressed in a brown shirt and white veshti fleeing with their bag.

They then approached the Sivakanchi police station to register a complaint. The police have now taken the CCTV footage and are probing the case, police sources said.

Meanwhile, couple is worried as their trip to India which began on January 27 from Mumbai, through Mysore, Chennai, Mahabalipuram was coming to an end in Kanchipuram. There were to return to Mexico in three days but won't be able to until their passport and visa are acquired.

The police have also contacted the Mexican Embassy in Delhi to inform them of the incident.
