Chennai: State transport minister M.R. Vijayabaskar announced on Tuesday that there would be no change in Rs 1,000 monthly travel tickets issued by the Metropolitan Transportation Corporation (MTC) under Travel As You Please Tickets (TAYPT) scheme.
The announcement was made in the aftermath of protests by opposition
parties and students who blocked roads and garrisoned transport offices urging the government on permanent rollback of hike in bus fares.
“While the Rs 1,000 passes would be issued without any change in fare, additional concession would be provided in the ordinary monthly season tickets issued to the commuters,” Vijayabaskar said in a statement.
For example, the pass that was earlier issued at Rs 240 would now cost Rs 320 (at a subsidised rate). The additional cost as per the revised fare slab will be borne by the government. Under the scheme, each passenger can get a maximum of 60 tokens, he said.
For other transport corporations, commuters can pay the amount to
travel for 20 days and can use the same pass throughout the month. There will not be any change in student concession tickets.
When asked about the daily bus pass scheme under which a passengers can travel unlimited number of times in a day (except AC and night) by paying '50, transport secretary, PWC Davidar told DC that the passes are still under consideration. “Till we find a solution to prevent misuse of the daily passes, they will be put on hold.”
