Footpath work in limbo, pedestrians held to ransom

The pedestrians is the foundation for the pillars, which were meant for the controversial skywalk project over the M.G. Road.

BENGALURU: While the BBMP claims it is working overtime to beautify the city by taking up white topping, high rise medians and installation of LED street lights, the footpath opposite Chinnaswamy Stadium has been in bad shape for the past few weeks.

Vinod Kumar, a resident of Sampangiramnagar, is a regular visitor to Cubbon Park. "Footpaths adjacent to the King Edward Statue and the stretch opposite Chinnaswamy Stadium were dug up. Existing interlocking cobblestones were removed and other debris were dumped on the road" he said.

It is been many days that we do not see any real work on the footpath and it has been affecting the pedestrians, he complained.

Even if the works are taken up to set right the footpath, it has to be executed and completed in a time-bound manner, Vinod suggested.

To add to the inconvenience of the pedestrians is the foundation for the pillars, which were meant for the controversial skywalk project over the M.G. Road. After facing stiff opposition from citizens, who complained that the skywalk was taken up to satisfy the advertisement mafia and would ruin the beauty of the area, it was suspended. However, the foundation is an impediment to the pedestrians.
Even motorists are unhappy as the construction debris and cobblestones have made their way on the road.

When DC raised the issue of the footpath with BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad, he said, "I have to check what work is going on near King Edward statue and the stretch opposite Chinnaswamy Stadium. I shall be able to comment on it after get the information from the officials concerned."

However he maintained that if there is any inconvenience caused to the pedestrians by the civic body, it shall be immediately attended to.
