Telangana officials begin sales tax probe

In Nizamabad district, commercial tax officials and tax consultants colluded to evade tax by producing false challans and stamp papers.

Hyderabad: Following the Rs 65 crore tax fraud unearthed in Nizamabad district, the Telangana state commercial taxes has started enquiries in other districts too.

In Nizamabad district, commercial tax officials and tax consultants colluded to evade tax by producing false challans and stamp papers. The TS government has suspended four officials and registered criminal cases against them. Action has also been taken against the tax consultants.

Sources said the erring officials from the tax department and the tax consultants had encouraged 114 rice millers to evade VAT in 2012 and 2014 by producing fake challans and stamp papers with forged signatures. The state government lost Rs 65 crore in revenue as a result.

Bodhan assistant commercial tax officer, Vijay Kumar, senior assistants Venugopala Swamy, Naga Raju, and junior assistant, Hanuman Singh were suspended and criminal cases have been registered against them.

TS chief secretary SP Singh on Monday directed the officials to make inquiries in other districts also.
