Last minute efforts to push public welfare projects
Chennai: With the election clock ticking, the secretariat is now a busy place with heavy file movements for pushing projects and public welfare schemes.
Files relating to relaying of roads, promotions and transfer of officials, tenders and bills related to civic projects are all being cleared at full speed, admitted a highly placed official.
A few departments like municipal administration, industries, public works, state highways, finance, personnel and fisheries department are also working overtime to complete ongoing projects, so that the state can finish a few inaugural functions and stone-laying ceremonies by the third and fourth week of February, before the announcement of model code.
DC also spotted a few request letters from MLAs and MPs insisting on department Secretaries to clear files related to works such as opening new revenue units, ration shops and provision of new electrical cables.
For instance, the Industries department is working overtime to inaugurate a few more companies that signed MoUs during the Global Investors Meet. Officials hope that commencement of new companies ahead of polls will provide job opportunities and induce financial flow creating a boom in the districts.
Starting from Monday, senior officials of Industries department will be holding talks with IT and manufacturing sectors. “A few companies have shown interest but clarity can be ascertained by next week”, a senior official said.
Fisheries department has also almost finished restoration of the Rs 42 crore Chetpet lake here and is awaiting a date from the Chief Minister’s office for inaugurating the project.
