Jindal Power to start power plant in Guntur

The power project requires 1,200 metric tonnes of waste per day.

Guntur: The first of its kind waste-to-energy power plant in the residuary AP state would be started in Guntur which will generate 15 megawatt power from garbage.

The Jindal Power has signed an Memorandum of Understanding with GMC on Saturday to start the power plant with Rs 150 crore expenditure to generate power by using garbage from Guntur, Vijayawada and other areas.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who observed that Jindal Power Plant was converting waste into energy in Delhi Corporation some months ago, decided to establish three similar units at Guntur, Visakha-patnam and Tirupati cities. In view of new capital Amaravati establishment in Guntur district, Mr Naidu and Jindal Power preferred to start the first unit at Guntur. The Jindal Power gave Jindal Urban Waste Management Guntur Limited to its plant and entered into the MoU with the state government by signing with the GMC officials on Saturday at Guntur.

The power project requires 1,200 metric tonnes of waste per day. The waste would be collected from Guntur Municipal Corporation, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and Tadepalli, Mangalagiri, Tenali, Narsaraopeta, Chila-kaluripeta, Sattenapalli and Ponnur municipalities. The VMC generates 550 MT of waste a day, the GMC will contribute 350 MT and the remaining 300 MTs will be from the remaining 7 municipalities.

GMC commissioner, S. Nagalakshmi said that as per the agreement, the GMC required to hand over 20 acres of land from its dumping yard spread over 75 acres of land at Naidupet with basis facilities like approach roads, drainage system and fencing. She added that after GMC handing over the land, Jindal Power should complete the works and start production within 18 months.

Jindal Power senior manager Mr Rupesh Sarma expressed confidence that Jindal Power will complete the works and start the power plant within the stipulated time.
