Bengaluru: Jumping signal? Fines to go up from Rs 100 to 500
Bengaluru: Bengalureans will now have to think twice before breaking any traffic rules as the city traffic police are planning to increase spot fines from Rs 100 to Rs 500-700.
Additional Commissioner of Traffic P. Harishekaran said that they have sent a proposal to the government to increase the fines and are waiting for the approval to implement it.
Though the city traffic police are conducting several campaigns against traffic violations, the number of cases still continues to increase as the fine amount is too low. The decision to increase the spot fines has been taken to bring down such violations.
According to the statistics provided by the city traffic police, in 2018, 82.74 lakh cases were registered, which is less than in 2016 (90.99 lakh) and 2017 (99.22 lakh).
Violators jumping traffic signals, riding without helmet, using mobile phone while driving, triple riding, wrong parking, violating lane discipline, driving recklessly and driving wrong side will now have to pay Rs 500-700.
A senior official said that the city traffic police are following the Telangana model, where the fine amounts have been increased as most of the violators continued to repeat the violations as the fines were too less.
He said that the fines will be strictly implemented in the city which will bring down the number of violations.
Violations like a minor riding a vehicle and driving without licence will likely to go up to Rs 1,000 from Rs 500. In both cases, owners of the vehicles are booked and fined Rs 1,000 currently. This may go up to Rs 1,500.
