Malappuram: The police is awaiting an expert opinion from the Army on how to proceed in the investigation into the discovery of five anti-personnel mines abandoned under a bridge at Kuttippuram the other day.
The district police chief in-charge, Pratheesh Kumar told reporters on Saturday that NSG experts examined the explosives and identified the batch number of the ammunitions. “We will not proceed on our own as the support of an expert team from Army is essential for the further investigation and collect details of the explosives,” he said.
Sources in the special branch revealed that police was already in touch with the Army. A team is expected to arrive at Malappuram soon to support the police investigation. However, officials confirmed that the items were the same used by the Indian army units. Tracing the history of the items is a big task for which help of the Army is crucial, it was pointed out.
Only if the Army units that use such ammunition were identified, only then the source can be traced out.
Meanwhile, a special investigation team was formed to conduct the detailed probe into the incident. DSP of district crime records bureau Jaison K. Abraham, DSP of Tirur V.A. Ullas and police inspectors of Nilambur and Perinthalmanna are the members of the team which are functioning under the control of the district police chief of Malappuram.
