BBMP will close accounts with truant banks: Tax panel chief
Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will close its accounts with commercial banks that fail to help citizens who head to the banks to pay property tax, Mr Gunashekar, Chairman of the Taxation and Finance standing committee, said on Thursday.
Mr Gunashekar said, “We have been receiving complaints from citizens on the hassles being faced by them. To solve these issues, I have called for a meeting with the officials of Canara, Central, Axis and HDFC banks.”
At the meeting, bank officials will be warned against troubling citizens, Mr Gunashekar said, and added that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike will close its accounts with banks that fail to offer proper services to citizens.
Survey in 15 days
Pointing out that many big organisations, including Bagmane Tech Park, are yet to pay property tax, Mr Gunashekar said, “We have served notices and even filed caveats in courts against them.”
Mr Gunashekar said, “Taxes will be collected from them. Station survey on big buildings and malls will begin in 15 days. We hope the survey will help find out cases of under declaration and property tax evasion.”
Wipro pays Rs 19 crore
Information Technology giant Wipro, which was a major property tax defaulter, on Friday handed over a cheque of Rs 19 crore to Mr Gunashekar.
