Cyclone Michaung: Low-lying Areas Waterlogged, Houses Flooded

Visakhapatnam: The low-lying areas of Visakhapatnam bore the brunt of Cyclone Michaung that resulted in widespread flooding and damage to farms and other properties.

The state, however, breathed a sigh of relief as the cyclone crossed the region near south Bapatla on Tuesday afternoon, with a maximum sustained wind speed ranging from 90 to 100kmph.

The aftermath of the cyclone has been characterized by relentless rainfall. Many low-lying areas in the city lay submerged under sheets of water.

The mainly affected areas were in the north-eastern part of Visakhapatnam, including Beach Road, Bheemunipatnam, PM Palem, Kailasagiri and Maharanipeta, where strong gusts occurred. The powerful winds uprooted several avenue trees. A few houses were damaged in Peda Jalaripeta and Managamaripeta along the seacoast.

Madlillapalem and HB Colony areas faced some severe consequences and KRM Colony was submerged in floodwaters.

Sujata Iyer, a resident of HB Colony, shared her distress thus: "This is the first time we are facing so much of a problem. Water entered our houses, insects were floating all around and this has troubled us so much. We have kids at home."

The residents of Visakhapatnam are now grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung and hope for relief from the persistent rains in the region.
