BMTC to receive 921 electric buses by March 2024, says Minister Ramalinga Reddy

Belagavi: The state government has initiated measures to boost the fleet of electric buses in the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy informed the Legislative Council today that by the end of March 2024, BMTC is slated to receive 921 electric buses as part of the government's initiative.

Responding to a query posed by MLC Gopinath during the question hour on Wednesday, the minister outlined the progress in the state's commitment to bolster eco-friendly public transportation.

The minister outlined that, to date, BMTC has acquired 90 electric buses under the Smart City scheme on GCC (Gross Cost Contract) basis. Currently, BMTC operates 390 electric buses with charging facilities established at 15 bus depots/bus stands.

In response to MLC KS Naveen's inquiry regarding the Shakti Scheme implementation, Minister Reddy highlighted a notable increase in revenue across the state's road transport corporations following the scheme's inception.

The average daily revenue post-Shakti scheme implementation stands at Rs 12.57 crore in KSRTC, Rs 5.39 crore in BMTC, Rs 6.60 crore in NWKRTC, and Rs 5.92 crore in KKRTC for the fiscal year 2023-24, the Minister stated.

He said that the Shakti scheme has significantly benefited over 108 crore women, with 1.5 crore women commuting daily on buses.
The minister also announced the approval for the acquisition of 5,500 new buses and the ongoing recruitment process for 9,000 personnel.
