Academy award for S Rameshan Nair

The poet has translated 'Thirukkural' and 'Kamba Ramayanam' from Tamil to Malayalam.

Thiruvananthapuram: Poet and lyricist S.Rameshan Nair has been selected for this year's Kendra Sahitya Academy award. He was conferred the award for his book titled 'Guru Pournami', a collection of poems based on the life and vision of Sree Narayana Guru by a jury from Malayalam comprising C.Radhakrishnan, M.Mukundan and Dr. M.M. Basheer.

An extensive range of works representing diversity in contemporary Indian literature, comprising seven collections of poetry, six novels, six short story collections, three works of literary criticism and two collections of essays were announced on Wednesday as the winners of the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Academy Award 2018 in 24 languages.

The poet has translated 'Thirukkural' and 'Kamba Ramayanam' from Tamil to Malayalam.

He graduated in Economics in 1966 and later completed his post-graduation in Malayalam Literature in 1972 before joining the All India Radio(AIR) in 1975. He later resigned from the AIR.

He has published poems like 'Sooryahridayam', before entering the film industry as lyricist in 1985 by penning songs for the movie 'Pathamudayam'. He has written lyrics for more than 450 Malayalam film songs.

Mr Nair was awarded the Vennikkulam Smaraka Award instituted by the Thadiyoor Dakshina Samskarika Vedi

Mr Nair was born on May 3,1948, in Kumarapuram in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu.
