Ramesh Chennithala seeks Rs 500 crore central package

Ramesh Chennithala has demanded an emergency central package of Rs 500 crore to tackle the cyclone damage in Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala has demanded an emergency central package of Rs 500 crore to tackle the cyclone damage in Kerala. He along with a Congress delegation handed over a memorandum to this effect to home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Mr Chennithala said that cyclone Ockhi should be declared as a national disaster and that the discrepancies in providing compensation for natural calamities should be resolved. Mr Chennithala had talked to additional chief secretary (revenue) P. H. Kurian on the compensation package before his meeting with Mr Rajnath Singh.

He said that the compensation of Rs 9,500 given for lost boats should be increased and that steps should be taken to protect the coasts from sea erosion. Mr Rajnath Singh promised to do the needful after the state government submits its report.
