Telangana: EAMCET backers raise their point

Rakesh Kumar, a senior Intermediate student wanted the entrance exam to continue.

HYDERABAD: While the government is yet to decide on continuation of Eamcet (engineering), academics and top officials are opposing scrapping of the entrance test that forms the basis for admission to engineering colleges.

With various options available to determine how students can be given admissions in engineering colleges, many feel that if marks in Intermediate are made the benchmark, then the whole purpose will be defeated.

“Corporate colleges go to any extent to ensure their students get good percentages in the final exams even in practicals, which are rarely conducted during the academic year. If admissions are based on Intermediate marks, chances of irregularities and malpractices in Junior and Senior Inter exams cannot be ruled out,” a government official said.

The State Higher Education Council is likely to constitute a high-power committee to look into pros and cons of having or not having an entrance exam.

Private engineering colleges feel it is always better to have a competitive exam to shortlist candidates for pursuing the engineering study.

“An entrance test after plus two education will be beneficial for students and it will stand them in good stead in the future. Admissions sans entrance exam will lead to doubts in the minds of candidates and parents,” members said.

Rakesh Kumar, a senior Intermediate student wanted the entrance exam to continue. “Students from districts and rural areas have also been writing Eamcet every year. If Intermediate marks are treated as the yard stick, then students from private colleges in urban areas will have advantage over others obviously due to various issues.”
