The forest officials said the incident took place on late Sunday night when a herd of elephants were crossing the railway tracks.

Guwahati: In a tragic incident, a speeding train rammed a herd of elephants, killing at least three of them including two pregnant females, in Assam on Monday. The forest officials said the incident took place on late Sunday night when a herd of elephants were crossing the railway tracks near Hojai in central Assam Nagaon district.

The driver of speeding Kanyakumari-Dibrugarh Vivek Express could not spot the herd and rammed them. The local forest officer Shafiqur Rahman who was on the spot soon after the incident said, “One of the elephants was a four-year-old female, while two others were pregnant. One of them aborted a two-month-old fetus after the accident and we found a four-month-old fetus inside the other during post-mortem.” Sources said the train was moving at a high speed despite the area being a wild elephant corridor.
