High alert in Guruvayur after Jayalalithaa's death

Tamil Nadu pilgrims under scanner as Jayalalithaa's health sinks

Thrissur/ Palakkad: With the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa remaining critical at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, Guruvayur Temple police here are on high alert in the temple town in view of the large number of devotees and Sabarimala pilgrims from TN who visit the Lord Sree Krishna Temple every day. “More persons have been deployed on the temple premises and the temple security staff have been alerted about the situation. Also, more cops have been posted in key places in Guruvayur town,” an official at Temple Police Station told DC.

DC has learnt that more than the worry of people resorting to any act of violence, cops are concerned about the devotees from TN resorting to suicide bids in the temple town if Ms Jayalalitaa’s condition worsens. Police in Palakkad are also keeping a close vigil in Kozhinjampara, Meenakshipuram and Walayar areas which are near the TN border in view of the tense situation there. As there is a considerable number of DMK supporters residing in Palakkad town, the city police are also on high alert in the town.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and the district administration has not yet got any report from cops about untoward incidents in Palakkad and areas bordering TN,” Palakkad Collector P Mary Kutty told DC. At Malakkappara region near Athirappally region where several tea estate workers had settled for work in the Tata Tea Estate, police said that the situation was under control and most of the Tamil Workers had now been replaced with inter-state labourers.
