Power panel met summer demand of 60.8 GW: SRPC chief

HYDERABAD: TS Genco and TS Transco chairman and managing director D. Prabhakar Rao, who is chairperson of the Southern Region Power Committee (SRPC), said that the southern region had a met peak demand of 60.876 giga Watts (GW) on April 1.

The demand during the summer and rabi season next year could climb to 65 GW, he told the 44th SRPC meeting on Saturday at Kochi. He advised all southern region states to plan in advance for the supply, duly considering the constraints earlier this year like acute coal shortage, sudden outages and non availability of power in the exchange affected the power supply, he said.

In view of the largescale development of renewable energy, the additional transmission network has to be planned meticulously with coordination among the Central Transmission Utility (CTU), the Union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) and all states.

Conventional generation projects provide three years for building the transmission network but that falls to 18 months for renewable energy projects.
