BBMP marshals collect 6.12 lakh as fine for using banned plastics
Bengaluru: Marshals from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike have collected Rs 6.12 lakh as penalties from those using banned plastics. The marshals are also acting strict against litterbugs and have collected another Rs 5.76 lakh from the violators in October.
BBMP officials said that such fines will make people fall in line. “The solid waste management team has been taking proactive steps to keep the city free of garbage. The street initiative is aimed at keeping the city free of black spots,” they said.
An official said marshals are stringent in punishing those littering the city indiscriminately. “We are conducting night checks in some areas and catching violators,” the official said.
“Our marshals are seizing banned plastics. Even after sealing plastic manufacturing units in the city, plastic continues to be available, and traders and vendors are using the material. Marshals are visiting such places, slapping fines and seizing banned plastic goods. In October, we collected fines of Rs 6.12 lakh from those using banned plastics,” he said.
There is a need to create awareness and to impose hefty fines to make people fall in line, he said.
