10,000 unused borewells are now RWH structures: Dr J Radhakrishnan

Official assures action to cover remaining wells soon.

TIRUCHY: As many as 9,940 unused borewells have been converted into rain harvesting structures across the State, according to State Government's Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Revenue Administration (CRA) Dr J Radhakrishnan.

He told newsmen on the sidelines of a function related to the launching of an awareness camp on precautionary measures during disaster periods here on Tuesday, that 2,000 unused borewells in agriculture fields across Tamil Nadu including 700 in Tiruchy district have been closed so far.

He said the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board was closely watching the situation, especially the pollution levels following the toxic smog blanket that was enveloping the NCR. People of Tamil Nadu need not worry, nor should they fear anything, he said and urged them not to believe in rumours.

He urged the people to alert the concerned officials about unused borewells in their areas.

Earlier, Mr. Radhakrishnan accompanied by Tiruchy collector S. Sivarasu and deputy director of fire and rescue services department, Mrs. Priya Ravichandran and others reviewed the rescue and relief measures of the department, as part of the public awareness camp.
