Initiate criminal action against litterbugs: Karnataka high court
Bengaluru: Cracking the whip on those who litter public spaces, the Karnataka high court on Monday directed the BBMP and the state government to take stern action including criminal action along with the imposition of penalties on those who dump garbage in public places which have been cleaned by pourakarmikas.
The court said this after the counsel for BBMP submitted that even after identified ‘black spots’ are cleaned and garbage removed because of the sincere efforts of pourakarmikas who have even drawn rangolis at such spots, garbage is being thrown on these spots again.
The Advocate General and senior counsel said they will intensify their efforts and also ensure that the penalties are imposed on such defaulters. The court also said it expects the BBMP to continue with the cleaning of garbage in the city and ensure cleanliness.
The court said that it expects garbage related issues to be discussed at the meeting of the co-ordination committee headed by the chief secretary. The BBMP further submitted that it will file a specific affidavit detailing the steps taken with regard to removal of old garbage. The court adjourned the hearing of the case to December 15.
