Tamil Nadu: Rains to reduce in coming days, says Meteorological department

Though the sun shone brightly, short spells of rain were received on Sunday evening.

Chennai: In what may be good news for the monsoon-battered districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, the Meteorological office said Sunday that the rain would reduce gradually in the coming days. Many places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry received rain in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, SB Thampi, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, said. However, “there is a possibility of rains gradually reducing in the coming days”, he added.

Though the sun shone brightly, short spells of rain were received on Sunday evening. While pedestrians and commuters heaved a sigh of relief as rainwater receded from waterlogged roads, train and bus services also operated as per schedule. Power supply at most of the places was not affected, apart from power outages in some parts of Mudichur for a few minutes late evening.

However, there were two drowning incidents and a possible third in various parts of Kancheepuram where many residential areas still remain submerged in thigh deep water. While Papanasam in Tirunelveli district recorded 14 cm, followed by Manimutharu and Nagapattinam at 12 cm, city recorded 1.55 cm of rainfall with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recording 0.89 cm and 2.01 cm respectively.

However, in a warning statement issued, RMC stated heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places is likely to occur over South Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Pudukkottai districts of North Coastal TN, Puducherry and Karaikal area. Heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Villupuram districts of North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Kerala and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Train services on the suburban network between Tambaram and Chennai Beach railway stations were disrupted due to overhead equipment power tripping on all lines at 6.30 pm on Sunday. Power was restored on the line after half an hour. However, train services on the down suburban line could be restored only after 2 hours.
