Internal' fight against triple talaq: AIMPLB

Sajjad Nomani said that it was a fact the Muslims ease the burden on the already overburdened judiciary by implementing Shariah.

Hyderabad: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is planning to start an ‘internal awareness campaign’ against oral triple talaq. Talking to media persons at a madrasa here on Saturday, AIMPLB assistant general secretary Sajjad Nomani said, “Oral triple talaq is a crime. However, it is valid in Shariah. We are planning to start an internal awareness campaign against it.”

Mr Nomani said that if the Centre tried to enforce the Uniform Civil Code on the country, it will face strong resentment not only from Muslims but also from several other minority communities, including Dalits, across the nation. He said the Centre may not be in a position to tackle such resentment.

Mr Nomani said that some adivasis have already moved the Supreme Court against the UCC and several other communities were also raising their voices against it.

Maintaining that it was impossible in a country like India to implement UCC where people of different cultures, communities and religions live together, he said when where a small population of 1.50 lakh in Nagaland enjoys special status for its law, why was the Centre trying to force UCC on a huge chunk of the population.

Mr Nomani said that instead of creating confusion, the Centre has to ease ways to implement the personal laws of various communities in the country that are guaranteed by the Constitution. He said that it was a fact the Muslims ease the burden on the already overburdened judiciary by implementing Shariah.

The AIMPLB representative told the Centre not to city the name of any country as an example where triple talaq system was abolished. Replying to a question, he said that it was the general impression among many that the Centre was raking the UC and triple talaq issues in view of the forthcoming UP election and was systematically using the issues to divert attention from its failures in all sectors like rising prices of essential commodities and development and welfare activities.
