Hyderabad: Panelists have tips on runaway NRIs

TS Commission for Women wants the commissions in various countries to be more active in helping them trace the missing husbands'.

Hyderabad: NGOs, lawyers and cops on Saturday rooted for an authority in foreign countries with powers to bring back persons who have abandoned their wives in India.

In a detailed discussion here with various stakeholders, they said that NRIs and PIOs must register their whereabouts and inform this authority, possibly the Indian High Commission, even of a change of job.

The rising number of complaints to the National Commission for Women by women abandoned by their NRI husbands is becoming a major cause of concern as there is no method in place to get them back.

Retired DGP Uma Pathi Verma said: “There is a need to make changes in the Marriage Registration Act whereby these marriages are registered in a separate format. The Law exists but implementation in these cases is an issue.”

TS Commission for Women wants the commissions in various countries to be more active in helping them trace the ‘missing husbands’.

Despite look-out notices and red alerts, there has not been any concrete response as the man has failed to turn up, said Dr Tripurana Venkata Ratnam, commission chairperson.
