Maoist leader arrested near TN-Kerala border
Coimbatore: Security was beefed up at the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border after the arrest of 30-year-old ‘Maoist’ leader Dennis inside the Kerala forest limits, close to Coimbatore.
Sources said on Friday that recently, a group of ‘women Maoists’ entered the Wayanad veterinary hospital premises and left explosive materials in the backyard of the college during early morning hours. A threatening letter was sent by the ‘Maoists’, claiming a soon-to-be-launched guerilla attack on the Tamil-Nadu-Kerala border in the Western Ghats.
Tamil Nadu Q-Branch police and the ‘Thunder bolt’ special operation team from Kerala combed the area along with the help of the Forest department.
Meanwhile, on Friday morning, based on a tipoff from tribals, Sujith Das, police inspector from Agazhi police station in Kerala close to the Tamil Nadu border, along with a special team with arms entered the dense forest area at Attapadi-Pudhur and launched a search. On suspicion, they took a youth into custody. He was claimed to be identified as Dennis, 30, a ‘Maoist’ leader from the Puliyakulam area in Coimbatore.
Dennis is believed to have become leader after the arrest of ‘Maoist’ leader Kalidas in September 2017.
A police official told DC that Dennis was arrested while he was roaming alone inside the forest looking for a spot near Attapadai-Pudhur close to the Tamil Nadu Kerala border, allegedly to plan a guerilla attack.
Dennis was taken to Palakkad police station under tight security and is being interrogated, added the official.
This development is significant amid the top echelons of the Coimbatore police getting new officers recently.
