GHMC to penalise erring contractors

The corporation has already levied a penalty of Rs 15 lakh on 10 contractors.

Hyderabad: The GHMC has decided to penalise contractors for delaying road repairs taken up under the periodical preventive maintenance (PPM) project.

The minimum penalty is set at Rs 1 lakh. The corporation which was supposed to fix 1,100 km of roads at the cost of Rs 721 crore between March and May under the PPM has not managed to complete even 40 per cent of it due to contractors’ negligence, a corporation official said.

The work involves milling of the BT road, re-profiling and re-laying it. It is ideally done once in five years. The GHMC has only been able to do mere patchwork. This results in uneven bitumen pads in the middle of the road, leading to bumpy rides. The corporation has already levied a penalty of Rs 15 lakh on 10 contractors. The penal amount will be a maximum of 5 per cent on the work sanctioned.

For the first two years after they are recarpeted, it will be the contractor’s responsibility to take care of the roads. For the next three years, it would cost the corporation about 10 per cent of the periodic maintenance cost. The same may not apply if the road is eroded due to water stagnation, which is common in the city.
