Chennai: Madras high court has directed the state government to file detailed report regarding manual scavengers who have died, distribution of compensation to their families, those yet to be given compensation and age profile of them.
When a PIL moved by A. Narayanan of ChangeIndia came up for hearing on Thursday, the first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar passed the interim order directing the state government to file a detailed report by October 23, 2017 of manual scavengers, who have died and distribution of compensation to their families, those yet to be given compensation and the age profile of the manual scavengers.
Narayanan sought direction to the state government for payment of interest in addition to compensation payable to beneficiaries under Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
