Kerala Union of Working Journalists moves SC on HC media room

The petitioner Union is also not interested in making the present proceedings adversarial.

Kochi: The Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Registrar of Kerala High Court to open media rooms attached to the High Court and other courts in Kerala.

The petition also sought a direction to the Registrar to provide safe and dignified access and working atmosphere on the court premises.

According to the petitioner, the incident occurred more than two months ago and at this juncture, the endeavour of the petitioner union was only to rebuild loss of trust between members of two professions. The petitioner Union is also not interested in making the present proceedings adversarial and the limited prayers in the present Writ Petition are confined to facilitate a democratic, and dignified working atmosphere for members of petitioner, by permitting access to courts and opening media rooms.

Petitioner Union has been making various representations to the Governor of Kerala, Chief Minister of Kerala, Acting Chief Justice of Kerala, Advocate-General and the Registrar of High Court of Kerala, but there are no effective measures being taken, the petition said.

The accuracy over coverage of the High Court Bar Association proceedings after the arrest of a government pleader for the alleged misbehavior with a woman became a bone of contention between the lawyers and the journalists.
