Top officials said the police tried their best by booking cases but the court gave them bail.

Hyderabad: Although five-year-old S.V. Sanjana is critical, the drunk driver, B.N. Venkat Ramana, a software engineer, who was arrested by the police, was granted bail on Wednesday.

Relatives of Sanjana staged a protest at the hospital and later met top LB Nagar zone police officials. They asked how can such an offender get easy bail. They alleged the police did not do enough to block the bail.

Top officials said the police tried their best by booking cases but the court gave them bail. “We booked a case against the driver for negligence and drunk driving. His friends were booked for abetment. The police did everything possible to make the case strong,” said DCP Tafseer Iqubal.

Doctors said Sanjana is on ventilator. “The MRI scan shows a blood clot in the brain. She will be under observation for 24 hours,” said Kamineni Hospital’s Dr Prasad Rao. Sanjana’s grandmother Amrutha said that doctors had told them to be prepared for the worst. The government said the treatment of the mother and child will be done under Aarogyasri.scheme.

Sanjana was critically injured and her mother suffered fractures when a car hit them while they were crossing the road at Pedda Amberpet on Sunday night.

Soon after the mishap the driver and two of his friends fled the area leaving the vehicle behind. Police found disposable glasses and some liquor in the car. A police team was dispatched to track down the suspects and they arrested them.
