BWSSB to plug leaks, illegal connections

In the recent budget, three hundred crore has been allotted to BWSSB for capital works.

BENGALURU: Out of 1,350 MLD of water supplied to Bengaluru, over 46 per cent is going unaccounted and measures will be taken to reduce it by 4 per cent in the next two months, said Tushar Girinath, BWSSB Chairman.

He was speaking after attending the contingency meeting called by reinstated urban development minister K.J. George to discuss the water problems of the city and measures to handle them.

“Owing to reasons like leakage, non-metering or poor metering, water theft, faulty meters and illegal connections, over 46 per cent of water supplied is not accounted for. By the end of 2017, the unaccounted water percentage will be brought down to 30 per cent.” Tushar added.

In the recent budget, three hundred crore has been allotted to BWSSB for capital works. Out of this, Rs 100 crore has been granted for maintenance activities. This amount is already been spent on replacing old and leaking drinking water pipes and sewage pipes in the core areas of the city, Tushar added.

He further said that measures will be taken to tackle any future water crisis. “At present we do not see any water crisis. But we are taking all measures to mitigate any future water problem. Directions have been given to maintain 7,932 BWSSB borewells. The board may hire tankers to supply water if the need arises.” he said.
