Ravi Shankar is new Vizag police commissioner

Visakhapatnam: State government has shifted the top two police bosses of Visakhapatnam city, naming new officers in their place.

A. Ravi Shankar has been appointed as the new commissioner of Visakhapatnam, upgrading the post to the rank of additional DGP. Ravi Shankar replaces C.M. Trivikram Varma, who has been posted as IG of Special Protection Force (SPF).

Orders to this effect have been issued by chief secretary K. Jawahar Reddy on Tuesday.

Trivikram Varma assumed office as Vizag city police chief in April 2022. His term has thus lasted for only 16 months.

Like Varma, his deputy Vasana Vidya Sagar Naidu, serving as DCP (Law and Order) in Vizag city, has also been transferred. He has been posted as SP Greyhounds. SP of Anantapur district. K. Srinivasa Rao, will assume office as DCP (Law and Order) Vizag city.

While senior police officers said it is a routine transfer, some underline that the post of Visakhapatnam commissioner has been upgraded, as the city will become the capital of Andhra Pradesh by end of this year.

Moreover, ruling YSRC wants a non-Telugu person to man the next year general elections in the city, where TD has bagged all the four major assembly segments during the last elections.

Sources attribute the transfer of Trivikram Varma after a short duration to failure in maintenance of general law and order.

“Varma’s tenure has witnessed abduction of Vizag MP’s family, death of a Kolkata girl, which West Bengal police is probing, and an increased number of murders in the city,” a source stated.
