Hyderabad: Doctors exploit loopholes in Bill

The Bill sets age limit for women having IVF treatment at 45.

Hyderabad: The loopholes in the draft surrogacy bill have been exploited by doctors in Guntur and such a practice must not be allowed, stated infertility specialists in the city.

A 74-year-old woman giving birth is not ethical doctors said and strongly condemned the practice.

Dr Ratna Duravasula, senior infertility specialist said, “The draft regulations have put the age limit for women having IVF treatment at 45 years and men, 50 years. The doctors in Guntur have surpassed these limits and they do not understand that there is also a commitment by parents to the child. The mother is too old to take care of them and it is not right. This sets a dangerous trend and it must not be allowed.”

The guidelines have been framed by the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Dr Preeti Reddy, another infertility specialist said, “It is very important for doctors to practise self-regulation. The age is a factor in pregnancy as these are induced. The woman was past her menopause stage. To stimulate the womb, hormone replacement therapy has been used but that is not safe. There are side-effects of these therapies and they are not as popular as they were earlier.” IVF treatment is for those who are not able to conceive naturally, but in a country where a woman can be humiliated for not bearing children, there is commercialisation and exploitation of this technique.
