2 drown in Noyyal while immersing Ganesh idols

When he entered the Noyal river for immersing the idol, he was washed away in flash floods.

COIMBATORE: Two brothers of a family drowned in the Noyyal river, while attempting to immerse a Ganesh idols in the suburbs of Coimbatore.

According to police, Ramu, 21, a resident of Poluvampatti-Viraliyoor in the suburbs of Coimbatore was involved in the Ganesh Chaturti idol immersion that took place on Wednesday evening. When he entered the Noyal river for immersing the idol, he was washed away in flash floods. His elder brother Manikandan, 24, who was present, panicked, jumped into the river to save his brother and was also washed away.

On receiving information from Alandurai police, fire-fighting commandos rushed to the spot and launched a search, but were unable to trace the brothers. The search operation continued for the second day on Thursday.

Around 400 friends and relatives of the brothers blocked traffic on the Alandurai-Siruvani main road on Thursday, demanding an intensification of the search.

Police and revenue officials are trying to pacify the protestors.
