Madras HC wants to know if Veda Nilayam cited in DA case
Chennai: The Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu Advocate General to verify whether the Poes Garden residence of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa found a mention in the disproportionate assets case and inform the court.
When a petition filed by Thangavelu of Musiri Taluk of Trichy, came up for hearing before the first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar, it directed Advocate General Vijay Narayan to find out whether the property figured in the disproportionate assets case. Later, the bench posted the matter to September 8 for further hearing.
Thangavelu submitted that the Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on August 17 announced that ‘Veda Nilayam’ would be converted into a memorial. He said Jaya was found guilty along with Sasikala and two others and sentenced to four years of simple imprisonment by the SC in the disproportionate asset case.
The house of a convict in a criminal case cannot be made a memorial. He pointed out observations made by the SC in the disproportionate wealth case that all the financial transactions took place Poes Garden house. Hence, he sought court to stay the move and also sought to quash CM’s announcement.
