Repeal of special status for Jammu and Kashmir : DGP issues alert

The DGP’s directive follows the advisory issued by the Centre in view of the abolition of special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir.

Chennai: Following the Centre’s repeal of Article 370, which provides special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu DGP J. K. Tripathy has issued an alert to the police and advised them to carry out security measures in all over the State.

In a circular issued to the zone IGs in this regard, Mr. Tripathy said the IGs should remain vigilant and thwart any attempts to stage protests by inimical elements. They have also been directed to strictly monitor public places and religious places of worship. Four additional DGPs have also been involved in directly monitoring the situation.

The DGP’s directive follows the advisory issued by the Centre in view of the abolition of special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir. The Home Ministry has instructed all States to take remain on maximum alert to preempt and prevent any breach of security or public order. “It is further requested that all requisite measures may be taken to ensure that peace and communal amity is maintained in all parts of the country and special attention may be paid to communally sensitive and fragile areas,” the communication said and stressed that the occasion should not be allowed to be misused by inimical and anti-social elements to cause breach of security, peace and public harmony in any part of the country.

Home Minister Amit Shah moved a resolution in the Lok Sabha for bringing a bill to reorganise the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories. He had moved the resolution in the Parliament following the President’s order abrogating Article 370.
