In the Rajya Sabha, Constitution copy, shirts torn up

Earlier PDP\'s Mir Mohammed Fayaz tore his own kurta amid the protest in the well of the House.

New Delhi: An unprecedented ruckus unfolded in Rajya Sabha on Monday as PDP's Nazir Ahmad Laway tore the Indian Constitution Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu to immediately remove both the PDP MPs from the House who were marshalled out. Earlier PDP's Mir Mohammed Fayaz tore his own kurta amid the protest in the well of the House.

The ruckus followed soon after Home Minister Amit Shah’s proposal to revoke Article 370 and bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories and PDP leader Mir Mohammad Fayaz tore apart the Constitution of India in the well of the House.

BJP's Vijay Goel rushed into the well of the House and tried to prevent the tearing by trying to snatch the constitution copy from Laway. However, he was unable to stop him as Congress' B K Hariprasad too rushed to the spot to protect Laway and pushed Goel away. Taking note of the deteriorating situation, Naidu immediately asked the marshals to remove both the PDP MPs from the House who were carried out by marshals. Naidu said he would not allow anyone to tear the Constitution.

Earlier as the government moved the Bills and resolutions to scrap Article 370, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and bifurcate the state into separate union territories MPs from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, NCP, PDP, CPI(M), CPI, PDP and RJD rushed to the well and started a sit-in. The Opposition, led by Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi, was on its feet protesting against the move.

As the ruckus continued, Azad "strongly" condemned the actions of the PDP MPs saying, "None from my party or who are sitting here (in the well) did this. We stand by the Indian Constitution. We will sacrifice our lives to protect the Constitution.”
