Avalanche in Ooty records 211 mm of rain in one day

Sunday night saw heavy downpour across Ooty, Kundah, Gudalur and Pandalur taluks in the central and western Nilgiris.

Ooty : Avalanche, a major catchment area near here, recorded 211mm of rainfall on Monday morning as the August spell of the Southwest monsoon has revived with a bang in Nilgiris. While holiday was declared for schools in Gudalur, Pandalur and Kundah taluks due to rain on Monday, the rains and winds are keeping Ooty in shivers.

While the SW monsoon in the first two quarters in the months of June and July proved to be a failure this year as the hills recorded only scanty rainfall during these two months, now, in August, the pouring rains raised hope that of good precipitation in the coming weeks to compensate the deficit.

Sunday night saw heavy downpour across Ooty, Kundah, Gudalur and Pandalur taluks in the central and western Nilgiris.

There were sporadic incidents of uprooting of trees and paralyzing of traffic at a couple of places across the hills, including in Coonoor on Sunday night and on Monday. The rainfall recorded in various centres across Nilgiris on Monday 8 am (all in mm) were: Upper Bhavani-90, Gudalur-74, Naduvattam-70, Devala-62, Emerald-61, Ooty-25, Kundah-20, and Coonoor-10.
