Telangana teachers condemn deo's crackdown

More than 100 teachers have been suspended after the formation of new districts and three teachers were suspended last month.

Hyderabad: District Education Officers in the state are cracking the whip on teachers with disciplinary problems and who are found violating the Right to Education Act.

More than 100 teachers have been suspended after the formation of new districts and three teachers were suspended last month.

According to the Telangana teachers’ associations, the state has to come out with strict instructions to strengthen the monitoring mechanism. Besides, there is also shortage of teachers in government schools. Susp-ension of teachers for one or two months affects the academic life of students, they added.

Chava Ravi, state general secretary of the Telangana United Teachers’ Federation, said, “We are against the suspensions of teachers on flimsy grounds. Before any action is taken, proper enquiry has to be conducted. The government has to issue strict instructions to the concerned authorities. The monitoring mechanism also has to be strengthened to make the academic life in schools smooth.”

“Instead of suspension, other penalties like stoppage of annual grade can be initiated. This will not affect the future of students,” Chava Ravi noted.

M. Ravinder, an office-bearer of the Telangana Progressive Teachers’ Federation, noted, “How can a teacher be suspended based on a WhatsApp message? We are totally against teachers sleeping in the classroom. Before suspending a teacher, the officials should conduct a proper enquiry or should issue a memo or a showcause notice. Teachers should be given a chance to provide explanation before suspension. This will deter talented teachers from seeking jobs in government schools.”
