Telangana: Greater care over release of fish

Collectors have been asked to make arrangements at all reservoirs and tanks to videograph the releasing of fingerlings.

Hyderabad: The state government will release 70 crore fingerlings in 77 reservoirs and 24,000 tanks in all districts in September to encourage the fisheries sector. The government has decided to promote prawn farming in 8 major reservoirs.

Collectors have been asked to make arrangements at all reservoirs and tanks to videograph the releasing of fingerlings following complaints that some contractors had not met the targets last year but claimed the bills from government due to lack of monitoring at some tanks, especially in remote areas.

Minister for animal husbandry Talasani Srinivas Yadav said the schedule for release of fingerlings will be announced after holding video conference with district collectors later this week. He said the government had released 27 crore fingerlings last year and this year the target has been raised to 70 crore.

Mr Yadav said guidelines have been prepared for releasing fingerlings.

Collectors have been asked to ensure that the fingerlings are released between 6 am and 11 am every day in the presence of people, public representatives and fishermen community.

“Officials, public representatives and people should be present at tanks and reservoirs and inspect whether the contractors were releasing fingerlings as per prescribed numbers. They should verify whether the fingerlings are of appropriate size and reject if they are not. All this should be videographed and CDs should be sent to government,” Mr Yadav added.

Referring to the sheep distribution scheme to Yadav/ Kuruma families, Mr Yadav said the government had distributed 41,139 units so far since the scheme was launched by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao in July. Each unit comprises 20 female sheep and a male.

He added the government would launch mobile veterinary clinics in 100 Assembly constituencies barring GHMC limits to save sheep from diseases. Mr Yadav said the government had purchased 100 ambulances for the purpose and people can utilise free treatment by dialing tollfree number 1962.
