Telangana: Girls' degree colleges start sans staff
Hyderabad: Two Government Degree Colleges (GDC) for women at Falaknuma and Chanchalguda have started this academic year without staff and accommodation. The cash-starved colleges are struggling to pay the guest faculties and have written letters to the government and public representatives for financial aid.
As a result, the classes are not conducted at these two institutions. Lectures expressed the fear that the students might drop out or might join private colleges in the absence of facilities at these institutions.
The GDC at Falaknuma is now housed in a primary school and three classrooms are allotted for the college. However, only two lectures — one for commerce and another for physics — are deputed to the college. The college claims to offer courses under BA, BCom and BSc streams.
“Close to 150 students have enrolled in the college since its inauguration and has potential to attract more students as hundreds of students are passed out from the nearby Falaknuma Girls’ Junior College,” said Mohammed Jawaad, a social activist. Lack of furniture and proper accommodation are also a point of worry.
“I have written to the director of school education to provide us the entire school building to run the college in a shift system. We are looking for guest lecturers to conduct the classes and we will get them soon,” said Dr B Varalakshmi, Principal of GDC at Falaknuma.
The Chanchalguda GDC was inaugurated by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi and local MLA Ahmed Bin Balala. Surprisingly, only three lecturers are posted in the college. The DEO allotted a school building for the college and around 110 girls have enrolled here. “We have written to the district collector and also to Asaduddin Owaisi for financial assistance. Guest lecturers have to be hired to conduct the classes and they have to be paid,” said Dr. S Shobha Rani, principal of Chanchalguda GDC for women.
The college has also asked the district collector to grant permission to purchase furniture as there is a ban on buying them now.
