Vijayawada: The police may grill Satyam Babu, who was acquitted by the High Court in the Ayesha Meera murder case. The case has been reopened for investigation following a government order on Saturday night.

Vijayawada police commissioner D Gautam Sawang said all the accused in the case, including Satyam Babu, could be called for inquiry as per the Supreme Court guidelines.

He told the media at Ibrahimpatnam on Saturday that the police would strictly follow the Supreme Court guidelines.

“As per the procedures, we will question all the accused,” he said.

When asked how could Mr Satyam Babu be treated as an accused after he was acquitted by the High Court, Sawang said that the case had been reopened and Babu can be questioned as part of the probe.

Meanwhile, Satyam Babu said that he would emerge innocent even after the re-investigation. Speaking to the media in Vijayawada, he said that he had not committed any crime. “The police dragged my name unnecessarily into this case,” he said.

Speaking to the media in Tenali, Syed Iqbal Basha and Shamshad Begum, the parents of the victim, said that the family members of the late Koneru Ranga Rao were behind the murder of their daughter and they destroyed the evidence with the help of government officials.

Ayesha Meera, a pharmacy student, was murdered in a hostel at Vijayawada on December 27, 2007. More than 35 DNA tests were conducted by the police. The police examined 49 writing samples and 30 mobile phone records. They also conducted 38 polygraph and seven narcoanalysis tests. Satyam Babu spent eight years in jail before he was acquitted by the High Court.
