Awareness campaign planned against ISIS

The commission is holding a seminar on Saturday at the Ravindra Bharathi in the city.

Hyderabad: The chairman of the Minorities Commission for Telangana and AP, Mr Abid Rasool Khan, on Friday said the commission has decided to launch an awareness campaign against ISIS by involving imams to foil the terror group’s recruitment attempts.

He said the commission is holding a seminar on Saturday at the Ravindra Bharathi in the city on ‘ISIS - Interpreting Reality.’ He said the recent reports of Muslim youth getting attracted by the ISIS and the arrest of an ISIS module in Hyderabad prompted the commission to launch an awareness campaign. Mr Khan said the commission has invited the imams of 300 mosques from the two states and they will be enlightened by experts regarding the perils of joining ISIS.

The imams will be asked to explain the things which they learn at the seminar in their Friday sermons, he added. The seminar will discuss ways to wean people away from the violent ideology of ISIS, and educate youth about the repercussions of getting involved in its activities. Speaking to DC, Mr Khan said, “I am happy the community has responded positively to this.”
