TN Education minister proposes 2 new varsities

Shiv Nadar, Sai university to be established.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister KP Anbalagan, through different bills in the Assembly, proposed to institute two universities, namely Shiv Nadar and Sai University.

The Minister in a statement to the Assembly said, the Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited on behalf of the government, during the Global Investors meet, 2015 executed a MoU with HCL Corporation, New Delhi for the establishment of a private university. The SSN Trust submitted a proposal for the establishment of a private university in accordance with the MoU and named it Shiv Nadar University. “To give effect to the MoU, the government has decided to undertake the legislation to set up the university,” he said.

At the same time, Anbalagan introduced the bill for Sai University stating, “The founder and managing trustee of Sai Education Medical, Research, and Charitable Trust will establish a university namely, Sai University.”

The bills stipulate that the universities would be self-financing and shall neither make a demand nor shall be entitled to any maintenance, grants or financial assistance from the government.

The bills also said the universities will have the power to impart courses involving the promotion of arts and sciences, engineering and technology, management, law and other professional courses both on and off campus and distance education programmes without interference.
