Karnataka Budget 2018: Homes for 3,165 Pourakarmikas

Waste processing facility has been developed in 98 urban local bodies, where 3,775 tonnes of waste per day is being processed.

Bengaluru: There may be piles and piles of garbage across the city but the state budget says municipal solid waste processing and disposal sites have been developed in 208 urban local bodies including BBMP and door-to-door collection of waste has commenced in 229 urban local bodies in the state.

Waste processing facility has been developed in 98 urban local bodies, where 3,775 tonnes of waste (including that in BBMP areas) per day is being processed. In an effort to provide basic facilities to pourakarmikas who maintain cleanliness in cities, action has been taken to construct houses for 3,165 beneficiaries under Pourakarmika Gruha Bhagya Yojane.

The budget says, "Our government is issuing a direction to the local bodies in Karnataka to levy plastic waste management fee at 3% on MRP basis on sale of goods packed with plastic within their local area. Fee collected in this way will be used for reprocessing of plastic for conservation of the environment."
