Now Amma brand for bio-fertiliser

Agriculture minister R. Duraikannu said she had initiated measures to commence the production of bio-fertiliser.

Chennai: Close on the heels of populist schemes of the AIADMK government like Amma cement, mineral water, canteens and newborn baby-kits the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday announced the distribution of “Amma (Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa) bio-fertiliser to farmers at an economical price.

Recalling late CM J. Jayalalithaa role in facilitating organic farming practices and in improving the lot of farmers, agriculture minister R. Duraikannu said she had initiated measures to commence the production of bio-fertiliser.

“At present, about 3,000 metric tons solid bio-fertiliser being produced through the department is being distributed to farmers. To perpetuate the memory of late CM J. Jayalalithaa who had taken an initiative in this direction, the bio-fertiliser being produced in TN for soil health and productivity enhancement, will be distributed under the brand name of Amma Bio-fertiliser, as per order of CM,” Duraikannu said.

Winding up the debate on the demand for grants for his department in the Assembly on Wednesday, the minister said the government horticulture farms would be strengthened at a cost of Rs 2.67 crore.

Further, the government has planned to form agricultural producers societies in ten districts including Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Tirunelveli districts, at a cost of Rs 4.32 crores during the current fiscal.

These would be in addition to the existing 42 agricultural producers societies that are functioning in the state He also announced that the government would provide solar dryer facilities to the turmeric growers in Erode and coconut farmers in Thanjavur at a cost of '24 lakhs.
