Hotel mocks faith of Shefeek and Divya
KOZHIKODE: Shafeek and Divya, a Muslim-Hindu couple, were denied a room at a hotel in Bengaluru on Tuesday as they were from two different faiths. Natives of Thiruvananthapuram, Shafeek Subaida Hakkim and Divya got married in 2010 after a love affair and settled down in Kozhikode. They went to Bengaluru on Tuesday morning and approached a hotel for a room. When the hotel employees realised that they were from Hindu and Muslim communities, they started harassing them.
Shafeek told DC that the staff could not believe that a Muslim man could marry a Hindu girl and live together. “Rather than the Muslim- Hindu issue, it was the Muslim man marrying a Hindu girl that irritated them more,” he said. “We feel totally lost when someone at a strange place says that it is impossible for a Muslim man to marry a Hindu girl,” added Shafeek. The couple are planning to seek legal remedies as the issue deals with the right of an individual to marry a person of his/her choice.
