Swathi murder case: Bail plea filed on suspect's behalf

Advocate unable to explain logic behind innocent' plea.

Chennai: Adding a new twist to the Swathi murder case, Chennai-based advocate G. Krishnamurthy on Tuesday filed a bail petition for the accused P. Ramkumar. He went on to claim that his client was innocent and was dragged by the police into the case. After filing the petition at the Principal Sessions Court, the advocate alleged that the police were shielding the real offender by implicating Ramkumar, an innocent and poor person from a village. In his petition, the advocate submitted that Ramkumar was in no way connected to the crime and had not committed the offence. Stating that Ramkumar would cooperate with the police during the investigation, he sought bail. The matter is likely to come up for hearing on Wednesday.

When DC contacted Krishnamurthy on why his client failed to react soon after the police flashed his photos in the media alleging that Ramkumar was a prime suspect, the lawyer maintained that he was yet to interact with his client. The lawyer was unable to explain the logic behind his submission to the court that the accused was innocent.

Meanwhile, sources in Ramkumar’s family said they came to know about the incident only after his arrest in their residence in Meenatchipuram, Tirunelveli district last Friday night. Since then no family members have met Ramkumar. When the police reached the village to arrest him, his kin said they were willing to cooperate in the investigation. “We have assured full cooperation to the police throughout their investigation” Ramkumar’s family sources said.
